Tinidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat various infections caused by bacteria and protozoa. It's chemically related to metronidazole and belongs to the nitroimidazole class of drugs.

Common Uses:
Tinidazole is commonly prescribed for:

  • Giardiasis – an intestinal infection caused by Giardia lamblia
  • Amebiasis – including amebic dysentery and liver abscess caused by Entamoeba histolytica
  • Trichomoniasis – a sexually transmitted infection caused by Trichomonas vaginalis
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Helicobacter pylori infections (as part of combination therapy)
  • Anaerobic bacterial infections – in tissues where oxygen is limited (e.g., dental, pelvic, abdominal infections)

How It Works:
Tinidazole works by damaging the DNA of the target organisms, which leads to their death. It's bactericidal and protozoacidal.

Administration:
Typically taken orally as tablets

Often given as a single dose for some infections (e.g., trichomoniasis) or multiple days for others

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea

Precautions:
Alcohol should be avoided during and for at least 3 days after taking tinidazole—can cause severe nausea, vomiting, flushing, and cramps (a disulfiram-like reaction).

Not usually recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy

Can interact with blood thinners, seizure medications, and others
