Niclosamide is an antiparasitic medication primarily used to treat tapeworm infections. It is included on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines due to its effectiveness and safety profile.

What It Treats:
Niclosamide is effective against intestinal cestode (tapeworm) infections, including:

  • Taenia saginata (beef tapeworm)
  • Taenia solium (pork tapeworm)
  • Diphyllobothrium latum (fish tapeworm)
  • Hymenolepis nana (dwarf tapeworm)

It works only against tapeworms in the intestines. It does not treat tissue infections caused by larvae (e.g., cysticercosis or echinococcosis).

How It Works:
Niclosamide kills tapeworms by:

  • Inhibiting oxidative phosphorylation in parasite mitochondria
  • Disrupting energy production, leading to parasite death

Importantly, it doesn't get absorbed much into the bloodstream, so it works locally in the gut.

How It’s Taken:

  • Usually taken as chewable tablets, followed by a laxative (to help expel the dead worms)
  • A single dose or short treatment course is typically sufficient

Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Diarrhea
  • Unpleasant taste

Side effects are usually mild due to poor systemic absorption.

Notable Points:

  • Safe for most adults and children, but caution is used in pregnancy and under age 2 unless clearly needed
  • Occasionally studied for non-parasitic uses, such as antiviral or anticancer effects, but these are still experimental

  • High dose vitamin D3 (10,000IU) per day is essential for any protocol to work well. And if the issue you are trying to solve involves bones add vitamin K2 to the vitamin D3. This will help speed up healing.
