Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat various infections caused by bacteria and certain parasites. It belongs to the nitroimidazole class of drugs and works by disrupting the DNA of microbial cells, leading to their death.

In humans, it’s commonly prescribed for:

Bacterial infections, such as those in the abdomen, skin, or reproductive system.
Protozoal infections, like giardiasis, trichomoniasis, and amebiasis.
Certain anaerobic bacterial infections, including those causing dental or pelvic infections.
Helicobacter pylori infections (often in combination with other drugs for stomach ulcers).
It’s available in forms like tablets, capsules, topical gels, creams, and intravenous solutions. Common brand names include Flagyl.

Side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, metallic taste in the mouth, or, in rare cases, neurological symptoms like seizures or numbness. It’s important to avoid alcohol during treatment and for at least 48 hours after to prevent severe reactions (e.g., flushing, vomiting).

Always use metronidazole under medical supervision, as it’s prescription-only and inappropriate use can lead to resistance or complications.
